Ecological Restoration, Waterton Lakes National Park

Partners: Parks Canada

Location: Waterton Lakes National Park, AB

Date: 2017/2018

Description: The prairies of Alberta meet the peaks of the Rocky Mountains in Waterton Lakes National Park. The smallest of our national parks, the park covers 505 square kilometers in southwestern Alberta and is home to some of the oldest exposed sedimentary rocks in the Rocky Mountains. Home to more than half of Alberta's plant species, Waterton is also the only national park that preserves foothillls fescue grasslands.

Parks Canada is currently undertaking a number of infrastructure improvement projects throughout the park, for which they retained KES to implement a restoration program developed to achieve efficiencies and improved outcomes for maintaining and restoring this important ecological integrity.

Within the scope of these ecological restoration goals, KES fulfilled the following duties:

  • Conducting invasive plant species surveys (including reporting and mapping);

  • Developing Restoration Monitoring plans and reports to evaluate performance and make recommendations; and

  • Supervision of restoration activities including a combination of manual, mechanical and chemical weed control activities; seed harvesting activities; and planting objectives.
