Waneta Rare Plant Recovery
Industry: Hydroelectric Power Generation
Community: Waneta, BC
Dates: 2007 – Present
Description: In 2007, a number of plant species at risk were identified to occur on sites slated for development in the Waneta region. Red-listed porcupine grass and other species with highly localized distributions are targeted for conservation through this project. KES was originally contracted to collect seed, develop planting prescriptions and install seedlings for these species at select local sites. Sites are revisited annually by KES to review the successful establishment of these individuals, the corresponding damage offsets and the necessity of future plantings. By continuing to actively manage these sites and re-assessing mitigation methods, KES and their industry partners are contributing to rare species recovery in the region.
