Senior Fisheries Expert

The Keefer Ecological Services (KES) team is seeking a senior fisheries biologist to lead a diverse array of research and consulting projects including proposal development, fieldwork, technical review, and reporting. KES is hoping to find someone with a relevant technical degree and at least 5 years’ experience in aquatic sciences and fisheries biology. The ideal candidate has excellent project management skills and experience, demonstrates a proficiency in acquiring funding and new clients, and holds themselves to a high professional standard in their interactions with local agencies, First Nations, and industrial clients. 

 

This position is on a 1-year contract basis with the opportunity to be hired full-time as a permanent employee depending on project demand. 

 

Safety is a top priority at KES. Therefore, the successful candidate is required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. 

 

Education and Certifications:

• B. Sc. or higher education, with a focus in ecology or biology.

• 5+ years of experience in aquatic sciences and fisheries biology.

• Class 5 drivers license with clean driving record.

• Desirable certifications include OFA Level 1, electro-fishing certification and experience.

• Registration as an RPBio in good standing, or immediately eligible.

 

Skills and Responsibilities:

• Able to work independently and with other staff as the primary fisheries biologist on staff. 

• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. 

• Fisheries data review, management and statistical analysis (e.g., HEP calculations and analysis, offsetting assessment).

• Applications for fish sampling permits, and technical review of other related fisheries authorizations (e.g., Fisheries Act, Wildlife Act). 

• Management and coordination of projects and technical studies, including environmental assessment for major development projects.

• Preparation and presentation of reports and proposals in both team and individual environments.

• Enhancement of client relationships and development of new business opportunities with both public and private sector clients.

• Willing and able to conduct field work in remote locations, including data and sample collection, data management, use and maintenance of field equipment.

 

Specialized Knowledge:

• Indigenous knowledge or experience (asset).

• Proficiency with computers and other electronic equipment.

• Strong business acumen.

• In-depth knowledge of freshwater fishes and their habitat in BC. 

 

KES is an environmentally progressive team with a positive and inclusive working environment. The successful candidate will be working remotely, with some time in the field (project dependent) on a broad range of challenging and rewarding projects. The ideal candidate knows BC legislation intimately through extensive experience in the Province. The candidate must have the ability to work unsupervised, in an office or field setting. Remote work in the field may occur; safety precautions and company protocols must be strictly adhered to. Evening and weekend work may be necessary at times based on the workload.
