WHERE WE WORK
Our office was constructed in 2011 with the vision that KES wanted to reside in an office built with natural materials that is both energy efficient and elegant. The structure of a the building is a hand-crafted timber frame made out of Douglas fir milled by the Tobacco Plains Band sawmill, and constructed by Hawthorne Timber Frames. The skin of most of the building is strawbale that is covered in a clay and lime plaster resulting in thick, attractive, and highly energy efficient walls.
As a means of experimenting with green roofing, part of the office roof is a living roof that features a number of our highly drought tolerant plant species which KES often recommends in mine restoration and other similar works. As we are advocates of sourcing local materials, the majority of all building materials excluding metal, insulation, concrete and windows are all from a radius of under 100 km.
